Last week, Google quietly released an application that allows users to run a series of publicly available AI models from the AI development platform Hugging Face on their mobile phones.

The app, named Google AI Edge Gallery, currently supports the Android platform and will soon be available on iOS. Through it, users can find, download, and run compatible models to perform functions such as image generation, question answering, and code writing and editing.

All models run offline, requiring no internet connection, and directly utilize the phone's processor for computation.

Cloud-based AI models are typically more powerful than local versions, but they also have obvious drawbacks. Some users may be reluctant to send personal or sensitive data to remote data centers, or may wish to use AI models even without Wi-Fi and mobile network access.

Google AI Edge Gallery, which Google refers to as an "experimental Alpha version," can be downloaded via GitHub. For specific instructions, please refer to these guidelines. The home screen features quick access entries for AI functions such as "Image Q&A" and "AI Chat." Clicking on a function displays a list of models suitable for that task, such as Google's Gemma 3n model.

Google AI Edge Gallery also offers a "Prompt Lab" feature, allowing users to initiate model-driven "single-turn" tasks such as text summarization and rewriting. The lab is equipped with multiple task templates and configurable parameters for fine-tuning model behavior.

Performance may vary by device, Google reminds. Modern devices with higher hardware configurations will naturally run models faster, but model size is equally crucial. Larger models will take longer to complete the same task (e.g., answering questions about an image) compared to smaller models.

Google is inviting members of the developer community to provide feedback on their experience with Google AI Edge Gallery. The app is released under the Apache 2.0 license, meaning it can be used without restrictions in most scenarios—whether for commercial or other purposes.
